Summer Internship Story - Meredith Solutions

This summer I interned at Meredith Solutions in New York City. Meredith Solutions is a television network based in New York City and Connecticut. During my internship, I worked with two television shows, “Better TV” and “Parents TV”.  “Better TV” is “a nationally syndicated lifestyle TV show, aims to make your life ‘better’ by focusing on trends, beauty breakthroughs, finances, fitness, sex, decorating and all hot topics that affect your family and relationships.” The show reaches over 55 cities across the country. As its name suggests, “Parents TV” is a television show that provides parenting tips and guidance for its audience. » Read more

Teach For America - Are You Ready to Motivate and Teach America's Youth?

Teach for America aims to ensure educational equality to all by working with over 450,000 children in low-income communities. There were 23 University of Oregon students placed in teaching positions in 2009 and Teach for America hopes for even more this year. New UO group helping students explore careers in Human Resources

Meeting roomHave you ever thought about a career in human resources? Erika Penner, a graduate student studying business and conflict resolution, has been working for the past 6 months to spearhead a new club on campus affiliated with the national HR organization, SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management). The club’s focus is to help students explore jobs in this field. She's also planning for students to network with local HR professionals and gain access to managers hiring for internships. "The best thing about this student chapter is that we are fully supported by the local Lane County HR Association. My vision is to develop an organization that is not only educational, but also provides students with opportunities to connect with local HR professionals."

This past summer I had the opportunity to participate in an internship at Funnelbox Motion Picture Studios. You might think this internship was in the heart of Hollywood somewhere, but they are actually located in Oregon City, Oregon!  Funnelbox exists in order to provide commercial services (film, digital, or computer generated) to local and national companies looking for increased sales. This includes creative development, filmed and studio productions, postproduction and audio production.  They have won several awards for the best commercials on television.  » Read more

My name is Justin Overdevest, and I am the campus Peace Corps representative for the University of Oregon. I served as an agro-forestry Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 2002 to 2004 and as a health volunteer in Peru from 2004 to 2006. I worked on projects ranging from reforestation, beekeeping, water and sanitation, solar panels, animal husbandry, and vegetable gardens/nutrition. As a campus representative, I offer monthly information sessions and hold office hours to talk to interested students and applicants.

Utilize References More Effectively in Your Resume

If you've searched for a part-time or full-time job or internship recently, you might have wrestled with the question of how to include references on your resume. Common questions I hear from students about references and resumes are:

  • Who should I ask to be a reference?
  • How many references should I have anyway?
  • Should I list references on my resume, or write "References Available Upon Request" at the bottom instead?
  • What information should I include when listing references?

Who Should I Ask For a Reference?

It is important to think carefully about who you will ask for a reference when applying for a job. Prospective employers ask for references to learn more about a job candidate's skills, abilities, and experience.
