UO Graduates are Working Hard and Getting Hired in the Midst of Economic Trouble

Starting last year (June 2008), the UO Career Center began surveying our graduating seniors to assess what their post-graduation plans were. This year, we were happily surprised to find that our graduating class had about the same number of students employed at graduation as last year; in fact it was a little higher! Thirty-four percent of the graduating class of 2009 had accepted a job offer by June 2009 vs. 30% in 2008. There was also an increase in students choosing to go to graduate school, up about 5% from last year. Salaries were a bit lower this year as well. Our top employers remained the same; Peace Corps and Teach for America.

The Senior Survey also allowed students to give the Career Center some feedback and let us know what we could be doing better. Thanks to that feedback, we have developed the following initiatives: » Read more

Don't Wait Until You Graduate - Start Your Job Hunt Today!

Clock photo from flickr by mao_lini Welcome back...or for the first time to campus. Unless you were truly isolated last year, you know that we have all experienced an economic downturn whose scope was unprecedented for the majority of us. All the promises of more jobs than qualified candidates and the impending "war for talent" seemed to evaporate overnight. Many graduates missed opportunities to enhance their career development through internships, leadership opportunities, smart part-time and summer employment and the chance to create a portfolio of job search tools with the help of a career counselor because they thought they didn't need to worry about it.

I thought it might be most instructive and relevant to share with you what we have been hearing routinely from recent graduates which can be summarized in 2 key points: » Read more

Student Job Fair this Friday!

Summer is winding down, Week of Welcome has arrived and the Career Center will be wrapping the week up with the Student Job Fair. This Friday, September 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the EMU Fir Room the Career Center will host over twenty on-campus employers, and several off-campus ones too, who are looking to fill part-time and Work-Study student job openings. All UO students (and parents) are welcome to attend this event.

Joining us for the fair is a great way to get a feel for what kind of jobs are available to UO students looking to work while they go to school and to start to apply for available positions. Career Center staff will be at the fair offering additional resources for finding a part-time job with local employers. There will be computers available for online job searching, area maps, bus schedules and local employment resource lists. We are also offering a “How to Find a Job” workshop Thursday, September 24, from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the EMU Rogue Room. This will be a chance for students to get a head start on their part-time job search. » Read more

Q&A with Nikos Ridge of the Ninkasi Brewing Company

On May 8th the Student Advisory Board headed over to Ninkasi Brewing Company here in Eugene, OR to find out more about the business of brewing in Eugene, OR with owner Nikos Ridge.  Here’s what we found out...

Q: What did your career path look like and how did you come to own Ninkasi Brewing?

A: I grew up in Eugene, OR and started out in the financial industry and I met Jamie (business partner) Jamie is more of the brewing side and I am the business side.

Q: How did your major in college or education lead you to this career?

A:  I got my degree in economics and started doing something inside the financial industry. After I met Jamie he told me Eugene would be a good community and area to start up a brewing company.

Q: What risks did you take early on in your career that helped lead you to where you are today?

A: I guess starting out in a competitive industry could be risky and also starting out in Eugene.  However, it was good because it provides good accessibility and a good local community.

Interested in earning credit for an internship this summer?

Interested in earning credit for an internship this summer? The Career Development Internship Program (CDIP) can help! CDIP lets you earn credit while you explore a career field through a supervised, pre-professional, career-related learning experience. If you’re a junior or senior in any major, this summer is your opportunity to earn credit while you develop professional skills, gain work experience, and network with professionals. Here’s what other students have had to say about their summer experiences through CDIP:

Sports Radio Internship:

The training and supervision were both ideal for a summer internship. My boss did an excellent job of preparing me for future work in the radio industry. He provided me with knowledge and lessons that simply could not be achieved anywhere else... - Elliot Nathan

Design and Editing Internship:

I had no idea what a digital design company would be like going into this. It is such a prevalent field in the art world; it was good for me to have some experience of what this world would be like. I feel like I have learned a lot about photography and producing images for a client instead of myself... - Joanna Jackson

Student Perspective: Green-Collar Jobs

This post is contributed by Jackie, a member of the Career Center Student Advisory Board.

The Color Green.

We have all heard of color idioms like blue-collar, white-collar, black sheep, white lie, and green thumb but there is a color idiom that may be new to you; green-collar. I was reading through old articles from TIME Magazine online when I stumbled across an interesting piece about green collared jobs. Conveniently the article was titled “What is a Green-Collar Job, Exactly?” » Read more
