Student Perspective: Who is Monica? Meet & Tweet

Monica is twittering about her current experience looking for work. We will be hosting her updates on our website. We hope you will follow her progress, learn from her (as well as others) and cheer her on.

You are not in this boat alone. There are lots of people to learn from and lots of people willing to help.

I graduated from the U of O in June, and now I’m twittering about the process of my job hunt because I want to share the ups and downs of looking for work. I’m looking forward to working, and most days I’m excited about my future. Sometimes, however, I get discouraged--an employer never called, I can’t find any new openings, or I read about the unemployment rate rising.

In case you want to hear a little more about me, well, here’s my story:

As a committee, we decided to visit the Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) headquarters in Portland, Oregon in order to learn valuable information about the organization. After our visit to a very high-tech Frito Lay manufacturing plant in Vancouver, WA we were curious about what to expect at OPB. We were excited to discover a modern, high tech, attractive building that included everything from a sound stage to live broadcast rooms! » Read more

Strategies for Career Success in a Down Economy

Photo by Eric RiceThis is a challenging year. We’ve all watched as our nation sinks deeper into recession, layoffs are announced and our financial markets tumble. We realize watching the news each day that things may get a little worse before they get better. Now is the time to take action and most importantly to remain optimistic. Remember, out of challenge comes great opportunity. We’re here to assist by connecting you with employers who are still hiring our talented and qualified UO students.

It’s going to take some extra effort and elbow grease in this market so let us all roll up our sleeves and get to work! We are committed to finding the latest information about the marketplace and who’s hiring, to ensure employers with job opportunities are connecting with students here at the University of Oregon.

Fall in love with your future: We'll help you choose your future instead of letting it choose you

fallinlove_web Many students come to the Career Center asking to take the “tests” that will help them decide what to major in, or what career path to pursue. If you have wondered what these “tests” are, and whether they can help you, consider these questions.

  • Would you like to know more about your skills and interests?
  • How about your personality type?
  • What about your values and how you make decisions?
  • Are you prepared to do a little self-reflection?
  • Do you have an hour or two to spend meeting with a career counselor?

If so, you may want to explore our Career Assessment Program (or CAPS). It’s free and it can help you identify and/or confirm some of the many possible academic and school options that may appeal to you. » Read more

Student Perspective: Visiting the "stairway to heaven" for Cheetos at Frito Lay

Frito Lay LogoTwo weeks ago I took four members of our Student Advisory Board on a road trip to visit two employers in the Portland metro area. Read on to hear what Business junior Zack Zweber had to say about our visit with Frito Lay.

Friday January 23rd, 2009 6:55 AM - Zack Zweber

It's Friday morning and I don't have class today. I didn't "go out" last night, in fact I went to bed around eleven. You may be asking yourself, "What is he doing with his life? He's in college, he's got no class on Friday's and he's hitting the sack earlier than his parents usually do?" I'll tell you my friends: on this particular Friday, I was on a mission. As a member of the Career Center's Student Advisory Board, I'm part of a team of six students who work on Employer Relations with the numerous companies that the Career Center hosts year round. Today, it was our turn to be hosted by the employers and Dan Kling of Frito Lay agreed to show us around a manufacturing plant in Vancouver, WA. So we headed North in a soccer mom van. » Read more

Meghan Robins, a UO alum (2008) sent us this submission about going to Italy to learn to teach english overseas. She is now teaching english in Spain. If you're interested in living and working internationally, check out the Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas (free for UO students).

I am a UO alumnus and am writing to you now from Spain. My name is Meghan Robins and about a year ago I met and worked with Tina Haynes, the Career Center Resource Librarian to explore possible teaching programs in Italy. At that time, I was asked to write about my experience, she said she always asks, but many students never write back. So here I am with some time on my hands, to tell you about my experience abroad. Employer Perspective: Learn to Fly with the Marine Corps

MarineLogoMO The Marine Corps Officer Selection Team will be represented at the Internship Fair, Tuesday, January 27th for students who would like more information regarding Marine Corps flight programs.

With the implementation of five new aircraft to the Marine Corps aviation inventory, the demand for pilots in the Marine Corps has significantly increased. For college students and graduates who have ever thought of soaring through the skies at 500 miles per hour, now may be the ideal time to apply for a seat at flight school.

According to Marine Corps aviator Major Scott Shuster, who has over 2,000 hours flying four different military aircraft, the thrill of flying a tactical jet is like no other.

“I’m utilizing my skills as an aviators for more than just flying from A to B,” said Major Shuster. “In the Marines, I’m pushing that aircraft and myself to our physical and mental limits.” » Read more

Student Perspective: An internship with responsibility, leadership, and a job offer

TargetLogo This post was written by UO student David Dardano who had an Executive Internship with Target and is now their UO Campus Liaison and has been offered a full-time Executive Team Leader position when he graduates. Target (and 30 other organizations) will be recruiting for their internships at the Internship Fair in the EMU tomorrow (January 27th) from 12-4pm.

When I first started working at a Target store over a year ago I was only interested in earning a little extra income.  I found that I enjoyed coming to work and really appreciated and respected my managers there.  I learned that Target offered an executive internship and that really peaked my interest.  I decided to talk to my managers about the internship and they advised me to go pursue the opportunity.  The interview process was intense, but a great experience. I received an offer to join the internship, which consisted of an overview of Target’s management process.  » Read more
