Alumni Success Story...Recent Graduate talks about her new career at Pepsi Bottling Group!

A personal view from Erin Gaebe- UO alumni: June 2008 Grad

As a graduating senior last June, I sometimes found my head spinning at the number of career opportunities out there as I undertook the daunting and at times overwhelming act of trying to find a job. After navigating job fairs, interviewing with several companies, and attending even more informational sessions, I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted from a future employer. The first thing was a career opportunity-not a job opportunity which could be short-lived and stagnant-but a real path for growth and future possibilities. I knew that I also wanted a competitive work environment where the company pushed its employees and expected a lot from them but at the same time did not treat them as disposable-just cogs in a corporate machine. I had high standards but knew the importance of choosing the right company. After my interview with Pepsi Bottling Group, I knew that this was a perfect match for what I was looking for. I accepted a job offer from them and have been with the company now for about four months.

Employer Perspective: The Pursuit of Excellence

We believe that the pursuit of excellence is a commitment, and is ongoing. This commitment to excellence is a vital part of our culture that joins every Sherwin-Williams employee together in service to our customers and shareholders.

College students can show us that they are striving for excellence in many ways. One of the best is by actively participating in their college experience. Our company looks for well-rounded individuals that want to make a contribution and can multitask during a busy workday. Seeing a student that worked during college, was an active participant in campus activities and clubs, played intramural sports and still managed to get good grades is a dream come true for us. Not only will getting involved at UO help you to meet new friends, learn about yourself and have a fun college experience, it will have potential employers competing to try and get you to be a member of their team! » Read more

Employer Perspective: 'Who, me? Work for an insurance company?'

Well, we have to admit, many of our managers and executives started out thinking the same thing. When we were in college, going to the Career Center looking for job ideas, most of the time we quickly dismissed insurance companies-- and yet many of us now work in the insurance industry.  Insurance isn't just selling, though there are financially rewarding careers as insurance agents.  » Read more

CareerBuilder surveyed almost 9,000 workers and gathered this year's list of the most unusual jobs held by the respondents at some point in their careers.

Protect Yourself: How to spot a fake job or internship posting

Hook, Line, Sinker (How I fell for a phishing scam) by ToastyKen.

You've probably gotten at least a few phishing emails that ask you to verify or update your personal information. While these emails typically focus on banks, businesses, and Universities, some attacks target people looking for jobs and internships. Although scam artists continue to get more creative, the following tips may help you spot a fake job or internship posting:

  • Most employers will not ask for personal information (such as Social Security Numbers) until you arrive at their offices for an interview and are given a formal job application.
  • Never wire funds (Western Union, etc) to a potential employer.
  • Never accept any kind of offer to cash checks or money orders on someone's behalf.
  • If you have doubts about a company's legitimacy, research them at the Better Business Bureau and the United States Federal Trade Commission.

Find the 2008 presidential candidate that supports your beliefs

Note: we plan to keep off-topic posts like this very infrequent, but voting is important!

http://glassbooth.org/images/glassbooth-logo.gifIn case you haven't been paying attention, we're closing in on election day and the amount of advertising and campaigning is reaching new (and annoying) levels. I'm getting daily phone calls and people knocking on my door trying to convince me to support their candidate or position, but I would rather find out which candidate supports my beliefs from a more neutral source. » Read more

A golf internship or a rocket science internship? It's so hard to choose.

Whether you're a business major or a science major it's not too early to be thinking about getting on-the-job experience through an internship. Why? Because your future employer wants to see experience in the new college grad they hire. Is one internship experience going to be enough to get me the job? Probably not in this increasingly competitive work environment. Don't limit yourself to just one internship or volunteer work experience before graduating with your diploma tucked safely under your arm. There are also plenty of opportunities to gain skills and leadership experience right on campus by joining a student group. Check out the Quintcareers article, "College Students: You Simply Must Do an Internship (Better Yet: Multiple Internships)!," to learn more. Read more to view this week's "Cool Internships." » Read more
