Fall semester is beginning to wind down and with the end of the term soon approaching I am sure your pockets seem as though they are winding down too. Between studying for final exams, packing your belongings up, and saying goodbye to all your friends, your thoughts may be elsewhere but starting the holiday season off penniless isn't ideal. Time to start searching for a winter break job.

Finding the money to buy those “Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanzaa/Solstice…” gifts shouldn’t be nearly as hard as you think. We are happy to report the seasonal hiring outlook, while down from last year’s numbers, is still good. Many companies, usually retailers, hire an abundance of temporary workers to prepare for boosts in traffic and other activities during the holiday season. Common jobs in this sector consist of stocking, wrapping, exchanging, selling, and transporting. Career Success: Jeseika Mitchell with the Sherwin-Williams Company

You know who you are: the driven, self-motivated type who can't wait to make things happen. Well, if it's a career path you're looking for, Sherwin-Williams is a great place to start. That’s what Jeseika Mitchell, a University of Oregon graduate, was looking for when she was nearing graduation last year. After completing the company’s Management/Sales Training Program, she is now an Assistant Manager at a Sherwin-Williams store in Bend. Jeseika’s responsibilities include managing day-to-day store operations, training employees, handling store merchandising, assisting in developing her store’s annual sales plan, and handling her store’s accounts receivable function. In her words, Jeseika enjoys working at Sherwin-Williams because “everyday I feel like my hard work pays off. No diligent effort I make goes unnoticed.” » Read more

Roadtrip Nation, a public television and webisode series, is coming to campus Tuesday, November 10 and they will be bringing with them their huge green RV and a message of self-discovery and growth through interviewing the nation’s most inspiring people.

Started in the summer of 2001 by a group of students who hypothesized that one way to figure out what you want to do with your life and who you want to be is to interview “people who are doing what they love, then ask them how they got there.” That group traveled 17,000 miles and interviewed 85 “eclectic” people, including former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Now what they have done has transformed their passion into Roadtrip Nation and a movement that “encourages students to hit the road in search of interviews with people who have defined their own distinct routes through life.”

Roadtrip nation is now broadcasted nationally through PBS and has been picked up by over 200 local stations including PBS’s Oregon’s affiliate OPB. They are now in their sixth season and are taking applicants for their seventh. » Read more

Are you interested in living, working, teaching and learning in Japan? The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations.  The Program also helps to develop foreign language education in Japan, and to promote international exchange at the local level through fostering ties between Japanese youth and JET Program participants from around the world.  The objectives of the Program are being achieved by offering college/university graduates the opportunity to serve in local governments or public elementary, junior high and high schools throughout Japan. 

The Program started in 1987 with the cooperation of the governments of the then 4 participating countries with nearly 300 participants.  As of the year 2009, there are nearly 5,500 current JET participants living and working in Japan from 36 countries worldwide, nearly 40 of whom departed from Portland, Oregon this past August.

Pre-Journalism major Jen Beyrle shares the story of her summer internship with Meredith Solutions in New York City, New York. Read on to hear about her real world work experiences on a few television shows and how it made her feel more prepared for the working world.

This summer I interned at Meredith Solutions in New York City. Meredith Solutions is a television network based in New York City and Connecticut. During my internship, I worked with two television shows, “Better TV” and “Parents TV”.  “Better TV” is “a nationally syndicated lifestyle TV show, aims to make your life ‘better’ by focusing on trends, beauty breakthroughs, finances, fitness, sex, decorating and all hot topics that affect your family and relationships.” The show reaches over 55 cities across the country. As its name suggests, “Parents TV” is a television show that provides parenting tips and guidance for its audience. » Read more

Only 1 in 10 students growing up in poverty will graduate from college. Teach for America aims to ensure educational equality to all by working with over 450,000 children in low-income communities. There were 23 University of Oregon students placed in teaching positions in 2009 and Teach for America hopes for even more this year. This past summer I had the opportunity to participate in an internship at Funnelbox Motion Picture Studios. You might think this internship was in the heart of Hollywood somewhere, but they are actually located in Oregon City, Oregon!  Funnelbox exists in order to provide commercial services (film, digital, or computer generated) to local and national companies looking for increased sales. This includes creative development, filmed and studio productions, postproduction and audio production.  They have won several awards for the best commercials on television.  » Read more
